The varsity, junior varsity and freshman football players attended the Northern Lehigh Passing Scrimmage Wednesday, July 30, 2008 in Slatington.

The Olympians posted an impressive 42-14 win over the Northern Lehigh Bulldogs last Saturday night in the first round of the District XI AA playoffs (pictures coming to site soon). It was the first post season victory in school history for Jim Thorpe. The Bulldogs took an early 7-0 lead but could not find an answer for the Thorpe passing attack. Olympian QB Corey Cinicola threw for 253 yards with 6 TD passes and no interceptions. Pulling in TD passes were Kysheem Lynch (2), Eric Busocker (2), Josh Hontz & Kyle Porembo. The Red Swarm defense was impressive as well, allowing NL only 3 first downs in the second half. In the district semi-finals the Olympians will face Lansdale Catholic on Friday at 7pm at Wissahickon HS.

The Olympian Freshman football team defeated Marian Catholic 21-0 on Monday. Thorpe scored 3 rushing TDs (2 by Shawn McHose and I by Justin Canalley). The star of the game was the swarming Jim Thorpe defense. Terry Moll & Sean Green each had interceptions, Green’s came in the endzone to end a Colt scoring threat. Another Marian drive was stopped deep in Thorpe territory when Pete McGuire forced and recovered a fumble. In all the freshman Red Swarm forced five turnovers. Olympian Joel Nieves scored on defense when he recorded a safety on an attempted punt. Congratulations to the freshman team.

In front of an impressive crowd, the Red Swarm defense lived up to its name on Saturday at Men of Marian stadium. The Colts never threatened to score punting 7 times in the game and managing just 6 first downs.

While the Marian offense was being smothered, the Thorpe offense was pushing the Colt defense all over the field. The Olympian offensive line blasted open holes all night. The primary beneficiary of this dominance was running back Phil Redline. Redline rushed for 195 yards on 30 plus carries. He scored 3 TDs (2 rushing and 1 receiving). Redline also past the 1000 yard rushing mark for the season.

Eric Busocker added an exclamation point to the Jim Thorpe victory returning an interception for a TD with 1 minute to go in the game making the final score 28-0.

Many faithful Olympian fans stayed after the game and congratulated the players on the victory. 

With the win the Olympians claim at least a share of the 2007 Anthracite League title. The Olympians must now prepare for the final regular season game against Lehighton. Thorpe also clinched a spot in the District XI AA playoffs. A victory over Lehighton will guarantee a home playoff game for the Olympians. Click here for photo gallery. 

The Olympian Freshman Football Team has evened its record at 3-3 following 2 dominate performances against Minersville.  Last week the Freshman shut out Minersville at home 14-0. They followed that with an impressive 26-6 win at Minersville earlier this week. The Special Teams set the tone on the opening kickoff. The Miner return man fumbled and Ryan “Frenchy” Boileau scooped up the loose ball returning it all the way for an Olympian TD. The Thorpe defense dominated the Miners lead by Joel Nieves. Nieves recorded multiple sacks and punished ball carriers all evening. On offense, Shawn McHose scored on a 30 yd run and Terry Moll scored twice (once on a kickoff return and on a reception from QB Sean Green). The Freshman look to continue their momentum when they play at Pocono Mtn West next Tuesday.

Outstanding plays by TIMES-NEWS Player of the Week Josh Hontz, QB Cinicola, Redline, McGonigle, Adams, Garland, White, Jones and the entire Olympian team resulted in another X in the win column.

Only 2 days until the 2007 Olympian Football season kicks off. Game one is on the road vs the Tamaqua Blue Raiders. Come out & support this years squad as they begin their quest for the Anthracite title and the district playoffs. Game time is 7pm at Tamaqua.

MEET THE OLYMPIANS

Meet all the Olympian fall sports teams. Wednesday August 29th, 7pm in the high school gymnasium.

Football equipment for the 2007 season will be issued on Wednesday August 1st at 8 am. Please check the training calendar to the left for other important dates.

Jim Thorpe will host a passing scrimmage on the game field Saturday July 27th from 9 am to noon. Other teams attending will be Palmerton, Pocono Mountain East and Panther Valley.
